ICE detains Palestinian activist connected to campus protests
Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and former Columbia University student leader, was arrested by federal immigration authorities on Saturday. His attorney stated that the agents claimed to be acting on a State Department order to revoke his green card. Khalil was taken from his university apartment in Manhattan and is now in an immigration detention facility in New Jersey. His attorney reported that the agents did not provide a clear reason for his detention. This arrest follows increased scrutiny of Columbia University by the Trump administration, which has threatened to deport foreign students involved in protests related to the Israel-Gaza conflict. The university has also faced funding cuts due to allegations of antisemitism on campus.
