Iceland volcano erupts for seventh time this year near Reykjavik
A volcano near Reykjavik, Iceland, erupted late Wednesday for the seventh time this year, producing lava and smoke. The eruption created a fissure nearly two miles long but is smaller than the previous eruption in August. There were no disruptions to air traffic or infrastructure. Keflavik Airport reported flights were unaffected, although the nearby Blue Lagoon resort evacuated guests. The fishing town of Grindavik remains mostly deserted due to past evacuation orders. Iceland has seen increased volcanic activity since 2021, with six eruptions in 2024 alone. Experts indicate that the Reykjanes peninsula may experience ongoing volcanic activity for decades.
