A cave-in at the Lothal archaeological site in Gujarat resulted in the death of an IIT Delhi research student and injuries to three others on November 27, 2024. The team was collecting soil samples when the incident occurred. Surabhi Verma, a 23-year-old PhD scholar, died after the wall of a 10-foot-deep pit collapsed. The other three researchers, from IIT Delhi and IIT Gandhinagar, were rescued and are in stable condition at a hospital. The team was studying the remains of the ancient Harappan port town, located about 80 km from Ahmedabad. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the cave-in.
