IMA Telangana says healthcare budget inadequate for needs
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Telangana has criticized the state's recent allocation of ₹12,393 crore for the Health Department. They believe this amount is not enough to address serious healthcare issues in the state. Currently, Telangana allocates just 4% of its total budget to health, which is below the National Health Policy's recommendation of 8%. Dr. Burri Ranga Reddy, the chairman of the Public Health Committee at IMA Telangana, emphasized the need for a Telangana State Health Commission. This body would help manage healthcare delivery, staffing, and tackle illegal medical practices. The IMA also pointed out the urgent need to fill over 2,500 vacancies for doctors and medical staff, which affects healthcare, especially in rural areas. Dr. Duvvuru Dwarakanatha Reddy, president of IMA Telangana, called for improvements in both rural and urban health infrastructure. He mentioned the necessity of better diagnostic facilities, more specialist doctors, and access to essential medicines. Both doctors highlighted that merely increasing funding is not enough. They stressed the importance of having a strong healthcare system in place. While they welcomed the expansion of dialysis services for chronic kidney disease, they urged for a focus on prevention. Dr. Ranga Reddy advocated for investments in early screening and community health programs to prevent diseases rather than just treating them.
