Imee Marcos prioritizes Senate inquiry over campaign rallies
Senator Imee Marcos has decided to skip the campaign rallies of Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas for now. She plans to focus on a Senate inquiry related to the controversial arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte. Marcos stated that the case is important because it involves the rights of a Filipino who was surrendered by the Philippine government to a foreign institution. She emphasized that amid campaigns and politics, this issue is critical for the Filipino people, especially for overseas workers. As the chair of the Senate foreign affairs committee, Marcos started the inquiry into Duterte's arrest on March 11, 2025. Duterte was arrested at the airport upon returning from Hong Kong, based on a warrant from the International Criminal Court. This arrest is connected to charges of crimes against humanity from his administration's anti-drug campaign. Marcos confirmed that she will not attend the administration-backed rallies during this time of inquiry. She is seeking reelection in May under the senatorial slate of her brother, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
