India and Bangladesh dispute border fencing as tensions rise

India and Bangladesh are currently in a dispute over border fencing, with tensions rising since a regime change in Bangladesh last August. Both countries have summoned diplomats to address security measures and past agreements regarding the border. India shares a 4,096 km border with Bangladesh, of which about 78% is fenced. However, fencing coverage varies significantly across regions, with some areas like the South Bengal Frontier having only 44% fenced due to geographical challenges and local resistance. The 1975 guidelines require mutual agreement for fencing within 150 yards of the border. Recent disputes have arisen over claims that Bangladesh's border guards are not honoring previous agreements on fencing. Upcoming talks between border security forces are expected to address these issues.
