India and Canada restart diplomatic talks to improve relations

India and Canada have restarted discussions to improve their diplomatic relations. These talks began around December 2024 and involve security agencies from both countries. This comes after a tense period following the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. Relations soured in October 2023 when India withdrew its high commissioner and expelled several Canadian diplomats after allegations were made against Indian agents in Nijjar's murder. Recently, India is considering Dinesh K Patnaik, its ambassador to Spain, as the new high commissioner to Canada. Canada has nominated Christopher Cooter, its former envoy to South Africa, for the position in New Delhi. There is still uncertainty about when these appointments will be officially made. Some officials believe it would be better to have a meeting between leaders from both countries first. Such a meeting could happen during the G7 summit in Alberta this June, but it is unclear if India will be invited to participate. The change in Canadian leadership, with Mike Carney replacing Justin Trudeau, might help mend relations. Carney has expressed interest in improving trade relations with India. However, challenges remain, including the trial of four men accused of being involved in Nijjar's death and upcoming federal elections in Canada that could alter diplomatic direction. Since late last year, both countries have increased their security cooperation, focusing on organized crime and the Nijjar investigation. Canadian security officials have met with Indian authorities, which indicates a positive change in relations. Meanwhile, concerns about ongoing issues, such as a major gold heist in Toronto, are also being addressed. The diplomatic rift began in September 2023 when Trudeau claimed there were credible allegations connecting Indian agents to Nijjar's murder. India denied these claims, calling them absurd, and no evidence was provided from Canada to support the allegations. Many believe that Trudeau's departure was a significant step toward repairing the relationship.
