India and U.S. finalize food deal agreement
New Delhi, March 19: India and the United States have finalized a food deal after resolving some technical issues. This comes after a recent disagreement over U.S. arms supplies to Pakistan. Both countries want to separate political problems from their economic relationship. The loan agreement is set to be signed soon in Washington. The U.S. initially wanted to impose certain conditions related to its food assistance program, but these have now been adjusted to meet India's needs. Issues like repaying a Soviet food loan and how to use sale proceeds have been sorted out. The American Embassy informed India’s Finance Ministry that the final discussions held earlier this month were accepted by the U.S. Government. Additionally, both governments will begin implementing recommendations on economic, scientific, and cultural cooperation, even before formal approval by a joint commission. Indian policymakers are cautious about predicting future relations with the U.S. However, many believe the two nations will eventually establish a limited understanding, allowing both to pursue their agendas without frequent conflicts.
