India appointed 22 high court judges from SC category
Since 2018, a total of 715 high court judges have been appointed. Among them, 22 are from the Scheduled Caste (SC) category, 16 from the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category, 89 from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, and 37 from minority groups. This information was shared in the Rajya Sabha by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. The appointments aim to improve social diversity, although the Constitution does not mandate reservations for any caste or class when appointing judges. Meghwal emphasized that the government is dedicated to enhancing social inclusivity. As part of the appointment process, candidates for high court judges must provide details about their social background. The government encourages chief justices of high courts to consider candidates from SC, ST, OBC, minority groups, and women for these positions to promote social diversity in the judiciary.
