India bids for 2030 Commonwealth Games to pursue Olympics
India is looking to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games as part of its larger goal to stage the 2036 Olympics in Ahmedabad. The country has submitted an "expression of interest" to the Commonwealth Games Federation for the event. This would be a significant opportunity for India, which has never hosted the Olympics before. The last time India held the Commonwealth Games was in 2010 in New Delhi, which faced issues of corruption but was seen as a success overall. P.T. Usha, the president of the Indian Olympic Association, expressed hope that the Commonwealth Games Federation will consider India’s proposal. The Commonwealth Games have struggled to find hosts recently, making India’s bid more appealing. In the coming years, Glasgow is set to host a smaller version of the Games next year after Victoria, Australia, withdrew. The 2022 Games were moved to Birmingham after Durban in South Africa also pulled out due to financial difficulties. Bidders interested in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games have until March 31 to submit their proposals. The Commonwealth Games Federation has confirmed that they are still reviewing bids and will provide updates soon. India is optimistic about its chances, especially as it aims to host the 2036 Olympics in Ahmedabad.
