India could be a leader in nuclear technology
Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), recently visited India. He met with key policymakers and discussed various global nuclear issues, including those in Iran and Ukraine. Grossi spoke about the importance of India's advancements in nuclear energy. Regarding Iran, Grossi expressed concern about its uranium enrichment, which is close to weapon-grade levels. He noted that Iran has not provided clear answers to the IAEA for some time. He believes that diplomatic engagement among major powers is necessary to avoid escalation in the region. On the situation in Ukraine, Grossi described it as fragile. He highlighted the risks at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which remains vulnerable amid ongoing conflict. The IAEA's presence helps to mitigate some dangers, but Grossi emphasized the need for ongoing dialogue to prevent nuclear accidents. Grossi praised India's approach to nuclear energy as part of its energy transition plan. He noted India’s advanced technology and the goal to significantly increase its nuclear power capacity. He sees potential for India to become an important player in the global nuclear technology market. He also welcomed India's recent move to allow private sector involvement in small reactor projects. Grossi believes this shift is crucial for addressing the capital-intensive nature of nuclear energy and can lead to beneficial public-private partnerships in the country.
