India exempts AC components from BIS certification to avoid shortages

economictimes.indiatimes.com

The Indian government has announced exemptions for certain air-conditioner and refrigerator components from mandatory certification. This decision aims to prevent shortages as the country prepares for a very hot summer. The exemptions apply to grooved copper tubes and AC compressors with a capacity of more than 2 tonnes. These components can now be imported without the usual Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is also considering extending these waivers to smaller compressors. Industry leaders have sought these exemptions because local production is not enough to meet rising demand. Additionally, local companies are charging much higher prices for these components compared to imports. Currently, the local capacity for AC compressors is only about 40-45% of what is needed. While the situation is better for refrigerator compressors, some manufacturers do produce them domestically. The DPIIT has allowed imports of grooved copper tubes until June 30 and AC compressors until February 10, 2026. Manufacturers had warned of possible product shortages due to delays in certification for essential components from suppliers in China and other countries. The government rules require that all components sourced, whether domestically or internationally, must have BIS approval. Several Chinese suppliers’ certifications have recently expired, threatening to reduce the number of available suppliers. Industry representatives hope the government will continue to support the market with further exemptions until local production capabilities improve.
