India introduces indigenous MRI machine, boosting medical self-reliance
India has created its first home-made MRI machine. This machine will be tested at AIIMS Delhi by October. The goal is to cut treatment costs and reduce the reliance on imported medical devices, which currently makes up 80-85% of the equipment used. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed with SAMEER, a research organization, for the MRI machine's installation. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is leading this initiative. This effort is part of India's goal to be self-sufficient in medical technology. Dr. M Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi, noted that most high-end medical equipment in India is imported. He emphasized the need for India to produce its own top-quality medical devices. This development is seen as a step towards achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliant India. The Ministry has also developed a 6 MEV Linear Accelerator, alongside the MRI scanner. Both projects received financial help from the ministry. These technologies, including the MRI, will play an important role in healthcare, making procedures more accessible and affordable for patients.
