India launches nationwide PLI scheme for textiles
The Indian government is rolling out the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for textiles nationwide, including in Odisha. The Ministry of Textiles announced that Rs 1,143 crore will be allocated to companies that meet specific investment and turnover targets under this program. The PLI scheme is designed to boost the production of man-made fiber (MMF) apparel, fabrics, and technical textile products. This initiative aims to help the industry grow in size and become more competitive. Out of the 74 applicants who have qualified under the scheme, 24 are micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). However, no applications have been received for setting up factories in Odisha. In addition to the PLI scheme, the Ministry is also focused on supporting traditional handloom textiles throughout India. They offer various schemes that provide comprehensive support to handloom workers and agencies. This includes assistance with raw materials, upgraded looms, solar lighting units, and marketing of handloom products both domestically and internationally. Furthermore, the Ministry promotes handloom products through participation in international fairs and exhibitions, helping them gain visibility in global markets. They are also working on brand development, such as the India Handloom Brand and Handloom Mark, to enhance marketing efforts. Technical textile manufacturing is encouraged by supporting innovation and research and development through the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM). The PLI also incentivizes production and sales to foster growth in this area.
