India repatriated 588 antiquities from the US
India has received a total of 588 antiquities back from the United States. This includes 297 items returned in 2024 alone. The repatriation is part of the US-India Cultural Property Agreement, which aims to stop the smuggling of Indian cultural artifacts. Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat reported this information to Parliament on Thursday. He responded to questions about the recovery of looted or stolen artifacts. The agreement between India and the US is meant to prevent illicit trade but does not set specific timelines or amounts for repatriation. The Indian government works with international organizations such as UNESCO and INTERPOL to recover stolen antiquities. The agreement includes provisions for technical assistance and cooperation in tackling the illegal trade of cultural items. In related discussions, Shekhawat mentioned the resurgence of ancient sects in India, particularly at significant events like the Kumbh Mela. This major Hindu pilgrimage sees millions gather to purify themselves in sacred rivers. The growth of interest in cultural and spiritual heritage drives many to these ancient sects. Social media and religious tourism have helped raise awareness. This revival of traditions is considered important for preserving India's cultural identity and promoting social unity.
