India shifts synthetic fibre and apples sourcing to US
India is planning to source certain products from the United States to reduce its trade surplus with the country. This decision comes as both nations are in talks for a new trade deal. By shifting some imports, India aims to enhance trade relations with the US. New Delhi officials mentioned that India may decrease apple imports from countries like Turkey and New Zealand, and specialty fibres from China. Instead, these products could be sourced from the US. The goal is to identify items that can be imported from America to help balance trade. India's trade surplus with the US has been increasing, reaching $35.33 billion in the last fiscal year. The US is looking to balance this trade. Both countries are working together to improve trade across various sectors, including goods and services. The issue of tariffs was discussed in a recent meeting between the Indian commerce ministry and industry representatives. American companies face tough competition from Chinese firms, which makes it challenging for India to switch sourcing. Officials are exploring different strategies to support Indian exporters amidst these negotiations.
