India to fully fence Myanmar border in ten years

thehindu.com

The Indian government plans to completely fence its 1,643-km border with Myanmar within ten years. The fence will feature "anti-cut" and "anti-climb" technology to prevent illegal crossings. The project was announced in February 2024 and has accelerated recently. A parliamentary report states that ₹31,000 crore has been approved for the fencing and construction of roads to improve access for security forces. Currently, only 10 km of the border is fenced, with new regulations for border crossings in place. The Free Movement Regime, allowing visa-free travel within 10 km of the border, has faced suspension and new protocols have been established. The project has met opposition from local groups concerned about its impact on ethnic ties.
