thehindu.com October 17, 2024, 01:00 PM UTC

Summary: India has developed a new handheld X-ray device for tuberculosis (TB) screening, announced Rajiv Bahl, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), on October 16, 2024. This device will cost less than half of imported models, improving access for vulnerable populations.

In addition to the X-ray device, India has created three testing kits for Mpox, with local companies manufacturing them. Bahl also noted that over a million people in India are affected by sickle cell disease, and 18 low-cost tests for it have been approved, each costing ₹30.

A dengue vaccine is in phase three clinical trials, with results expected within a year. If proven safe and effective, India plans to develop its own dengue vaccine.
