Indian government boosts connectivity projects in Ladakh
The Indian government is rapidly improving road connectivity in Ladakh since it became a Union Territory in 2019. Junior Union highways minister Harsh Malhotra spoke about the significant development in the region, which is crucial for both civilians and military needs. According to Malhotra, the central government has invested Rs 20,660 crore in road development from 2020 to now. He highlighted the Bilaspur-Manali-Leh railway project, which has a budget of Rs 1.31 lakh crore. This project aims to reduce travel time from Delhi to Leh from 40 hours by road to just 20 hours by train. Malhotra also addressed air connectivity improvements, mentioning a new terminal being built at Leh airport with Rs 640 crore allocated for it. He confirmed that the Srinagar-Leh rail project is on hold but not cancelled. Among the key projects mentioned is the Shinku La Tunnel. This Rs 1,200-crore project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year. It is a 4.1-km tunnel that will connect Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh, providing all-weather access to Leh. Further projects include the Nimu-Padam-Darcha Road, with Rs 2,405 crore allocated to strengthen connectivity in the area. Other ongoing projects like the Zanskar-Kargil road and Zoji La tunnel were also noted by Malhotra.
