Indian Railways targets net zero by 2030 using nuclear
Indian Railways is working with the Department of Atomic Energy and the power ministry to build small nuclear power plants. This effort is part of a plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2030. The rail service aims to meet 10 gigawatts (GW) of energy needs by using nuclear, thermal, and renewable power sources. In 2025, Indian Railways plans to buy 3 GW of renewable energy, mainly from hydropower. It will also secure 3 GW from thermal and nuclear sources. The additional power required will be provided through deals with power distribution companies. Officials say that there is enough land available for these projects, and site selection has already started. Funding for these initiatives will come from public sector financing arms associated with Indian Railways. The Indian Railways Finance Corporation is likely to handle the financial arrangements. The idea of using nuclear power for Indian Railways has been discussed since 2016, but previous plans were delayed due to financial issues. Recently, the government announced a budget of Rs 20,000 crore to encourage the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) by 2033. This move aims to help major power consumers transition to nuclear energy quickly. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that discussions are ongoing with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India regarding power supply for the railway system. He noted that the power demands of Indian Railways continue to grow.
