₹10 crore allocated for Kollidam river bund protection

The government has approved ₹10 crore for the construction of a gabion wall on the Kollidam river bund near Tiruchi. This project aims to protect against erosion and flooding in the area, especially after previous occurrences in 2022 and 2024. The Water Resources Department (WRD) plans to start building the wall soon. The Kollidam river is essential for carrying floodwater from the River Cauvery. In recent years, heavy rainfall has caused significant erosion along the bund. Quick action by the WRD helped prevent major damage in the past. The new gabion wall will be a permanent solution to bolster the river bank against strong water flow. Gabion walls are made of cages filled with rocks, which help stabilize the land. The WRD also plans to incorporate groynes into this wall design to better manage water energy. This project will be different from a similar wall built last year at Anbil, which cost about ₹6.83 crore. In addition to this project, the government has allocated another ₹10 crore for flood prevention works at Siruthaiyur and Poovalur, areas that have faced severe flooding in the past. The WRD intends to complete these projects before the upcoming monsoon season.
