₹11,311 crore drugs seized at Indian ports over five years

The Indian Home Ministry reported on March 18, 2025, that drugs valued at over ₹11,311 crore were seized from seaports in the last five years. He mentioned that Gujarat accounted for eight cases, while Maharashtra had eight as well. Other cases were reported in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. The drugs seized included cocaine, heroin, Methamphetamine, and Tramadol. Rahul Gandhi raised concerns about the measures the government is taking to improve port security and combat drug trafficking. In his reply, Minister Rai emphasized that the drug seizures were the result of effective coordination among various law enforcement agencies. The government has implemented several strategies to enhance port security. These include constant monitoring by agencies like Customs, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the Navy, and the Coast Guard. Regular inspections are conducted to ensure proper checks on goods before their release. Additionally, the NCB collaborates with the Navy and Coast Guard to carry out joint operations against drug trafficking. Training is being provided to port authorities to help in the detection and prevention of drug smuggling. An Anti-Narcotics Task Force has also been set up in each state to oversee significant drug cases. Minister Rai noted ongoing efforts to enhance international cooperation for better control of narcotic substances and related chemicals.
