₹414.74 crore approved for Gondwana University in Chandrapur
The state government has approved ₹414.74 crore to establish a sub-centre of Gondwana University in Chandrapur. This decision is expected to improve educational opportunities for local students. Higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil announced the funding in the Legislative Assembly, stating it would benefit many students and teachers. MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar highlighted the need for a sub-centre during the ongoing budget session. He noted that students had previously traveled to Gadchiroli for university services, creating challenges for them. Mungantiwar outlined the history of Gondwana University, which was proposed in 2007 and set up in Gadchiroli in 2011. He mentioned efforts for a sub-centre in Chandrapur that started a few years later. The project gained momentum after the higher and technical education department approved it on June 1, 2023. The district collector also allocated 8.5 acres of land for the sub-centre. The management council endorsed the construction on May 30, 2024. Mungantiwar expressed frustration that the funding had been delayed, despite administrative approvals. Minister Patil ensured that the necessary funds would feature in the supplementary budget planned for July. He also stated that Gondwana University would provide interim financial support until the full amount is available.
