Indian scholar self-deports after visa revocation
Ranjani Srinivasan, an Indian doctoral student at Columbia University, self-deported on March 11, 2025, after her visa was revoked for alleged support of Hamas. This action follows increased scrutiny of foreign students amid pro-Palestinian protests. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed her departure, stating that her visa was canceled due to security concerns. Another Columbia student, Leqaa Kordia, was arrested for overstaying her visa and had previously been detained for participating in pro-Hamas protests. Srinivasan was pursuing a doctoral degree in Urban Planning and had received a Fulbright scholarship. The government has not provided further details on the allegations against her.
