India's Defence Ministry emphasizes complexity in theatre command rollout
The Defence Ministry has stated that several complex issues need to be addressed before implementing integrated theatre commands. These commands are part of ongoing military reforms aimed at enhancing the armed forces’ capabilities. During a parliamentary session, the ministry highlighted that discussions are ongoing regarding the reorganization of the Armed Forces into these commands. This change is seen as a significant reform meant to improve operational efficiency and the use of military resources. The ministry emphasizes that integrated theatre commands will help the military adapt to new challenges, including cyber and space warfare. Three main theatre commands are planned: a northern command focused on China, a western command for Pakistan, and a maritime command. These changes aim to create better coordination among different branches of the military. The parliamentary committee noted that this new structure will ensure that resources and planning processes are unified. Theatre commands will involve personnel from all three military services, sharing responsibilities across various operational areas such as logistics and intelligence. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will oversee quarterly reviews of these reforms, which are expected to accelerate. The ministry has declared 2025 as the "year of reforms" to modernize the military. Theatreisation is a top priority among nine identified areas for focused improvement, seeking to build local capabilities and streamline procurement processes.
