India's electric bus sales decline, raising concerns
India's electric bus sales have dropped to 3,124 units in FY25, a decline from the previous year. This has reduced the market penetration of electric buses to 4.72%, the lowest since FY22, raising concerns about the government's green transport initiatives. The government plans to allocate 4,391 crore for over 14,000 electric buses under the PM E-drive scheme. However, the rollout has not yet begun, as the government is still assessing demand from various cities, including Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Despite previous growth in electric bus sales, the market has stagnated in FY25. The government is implementing a phased manufacturing program to boost local production, but challenges remain before incentives for electric buses can be fully realized.
