India's footwear industry to create one million jobs
The leather and non-leather footwear industry in India is expected to create one million jobs in the next five years, according to R Selvam from the Council for Leather Exports. Tamil Nadu, the largest exporter in the country, will play a key role. The state is attracting foreign investments, particularly in athletic footwear, with brands like Nike and Adidas expanding production there. The industry is also diversifying geographically, moving beyond northern Tamil Nadu to western and central districts. The turnover target for the industry has increased to $50 billion by 2029-30, with $14 billion from exports. Recent budget measures, including tax exemptions, aim to support growth in the tanning segment, crucial for the industry.
