India's premium travel market is rapidly growing
India's travel market is estimated to be a $100 billion opportunity, according to Chris Hartley, CEO of the Global Hotel Alliance (GHA). He shared this insight at the Skift India Forum 2025. Despite economic challenges, Indian travelers are increasingly choosing premium international travel. Hartley noted that the recent surge in outbound travel is helping India close the $100 billion spending gap with China. In 2023, 28.2 million people traveled from India, surpassing pre-pandemic levels of 26 million in 2019. Improved visa processes and better infrastructure are expected to boost this trend further. GHA, which partners with luxury hotels across the globe, aims to expand its presence in India to 100 properties within the next few years. The company is experiencing double-digit growth in bookings from Indian travelers. Hartley emphasized that leisure travelers are driving this boom, with 80% of them showing a preference for well-known brands and about 25% seeking luxury accommodations. Despite challenges such as visa restrictions and inadequate infrastructure in the past, Hartley believes these issues are being addressed. He pointed out the growing desire for travel among Indian consumers, which is reflected in the market's potential. Looking ahead, Hartley highlighted that many hotel chains are now focusing on the inbound travel market in India. GHA plans to add more hotels and brands to capture this growth. Last year, their member base in India increased by 18%, showcasing the right conditions for hotel investment and expansion.
