The Indonesian government plans to evacuate at least 16,000 residents from villages near Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, which erupted recently, killing nine people and damaging thousands of homes.
As of Tuesday, about 2,472 residents have been evacuated, with efforts hindered by volcanic ash on roads. Evacuees are being housed in schools and temporary shelters about 20 km from the volcano.
Authorities have declared a 58-day state of emergency to facilitate aid. Four small airports on Flores Island are closed due to the eruption, which remains at the highest alert level.
