Indonesia to interrogate over 500 scam center returnees

Indonesia is set to question over 500 citizens who were recently rescued from online scam centers in Myanmar. This group is the largest to arrive in Jakarta following a global effort against such operations. The centers in Myanmar, particularly in Myawaddy, are known for engaging in human trafficking and generating huge profits for criminal gangs. On Tuesday morning, about 200 Indonesians arrived at Jakarta's airport from Myawaddy via Thailand. Another 200 are expected to land later in the day. Chief Security Minister Budi Gunawan mentioned that around 154 more Indonesians could arrive on Wednesday. These individuals were part of a larger group of around 7,000 people from various countries rescued from the scam centers. Officials will assess whether these returnees are victims or willing participants in crimes, according to Gunawan. Those cleared of wrongdoing will be allowed to return home, while individuals suspected of involvement in the scams may face legal action in Indonesia. The returning citizens were seen wearing red masks and bandanas, and many were emotional upon arrival, expressing relief and gratitude to officials. Some survivors spoke of mistreatment, including beatings and threats from their captors. Previously, in early March, another group of 84 Indonesians returned from Myanmar, while 70 still remain there, some under detention. Countries like China and India have also been repatriating their citizens, but many remain trapped in the scam operations, including individuals from African nations.
