Injury derails south London footballer's professional dreams
A 21-year-old footballer from south London, Collin Skhoyimue, shares how an injury shattered his dream of becoming a professional player. He was signed to a League One academy when he was almost 14 years old. Two months later, Collin sustained a meniscus injury during a match and was released from the academy. Collin, who has loved football since he was five, felt that losing the chance to play was like having his dream taken away. He was one of three players selected from 300 trialists, and he worked hard to prepare for the opportunity. After his injury, he went through six months of rehab but later found out he needed surgery. Unfortunately, he had to wait nine months for the operation. After surgery, Collin returned for the under-16 season, but he was released again due to a coaching change. He was shocked that it had nothing to do with his abilities but rather circumstances beyond his control. He realized that in football, players are often seen as assets and could be let go when injured. Collin faced more challenges when his knee problems persisted. After two surgeries, doctors told him he would never play again, leaving him devastated. Despite this, he did not give up hope. After several years, he made a comeback in August 2022, which he described as one of the best days of his life. Now, Collin has found a passion for coaching. He manages an under-7 team and has started his own coaching business to help young players. However, he recently suffered another injury and has been in recovery since December 2023. Collin hosts a social media series called Injured 2 Pro, where he shares his story to inspire others. He believes his experiences have given him much to share with the world.
