Inmate dies after injury at Central New York prison, family reports
Edward Sholtz, a 22-year-old inmate, died on January 5 at Wynn Hospital after being declared brain dead on December 20. He was injured at the Mid-State Correctional Facility and had been hospitalized since December 17. The New York State Department of Corrections is investigating the incident, with no signs of staff misconduct reported. The state Attorney General’s Office is expected to assess the circumstances surrounding Sholtz's death. Sholtz was serving a 12-year sentence for attempted rape and assault. His family believes he did not attempt suicide and that he was not injured by another inmate, as he lived alone in his cell.
