Inquest deems Dundalk boy's death accidental
An inquest has determined that the death of 11-year-old Calvin Curley-Gray was a tragic accident. He fell through a roof and landed in the smoking area of a pub in Dundalk, Ireland, in September 2022. Coroner Dr. Cróna Gallagher delivered the verdict of accidental death after reviewing the events leading to Calvin's demise. On September 4, 2022, Calvin was out with friends when they decided to climb onto a roof. Dr. Gallagher noted that children often do not understand danger in the same way adults do and suggested the boys acted out of a sense of adventure. Witness statements revealed that Calvin and his friends had accessed the roof via a metal staircase. They were on the roof for about five to ten minutes before Calvin fell through a part covered by a black tarpaulin. One of his friends described the moment and rushed to tell the others what had happened. After the fall, a passerby, Gerard Agnew, found Calvin lying in the smoking area of the pub and immediately sought help. The pub owner, Adrianne Callan, also responded quickly, calling emergency services. Calvin was treated at Temple Street Children's Hospital for about two weeks but was pronounced brain dead on September 17 and later died on September 19. A postmortem examination confirmed that Calvin died from a traumatic brain injury caused by the fall. After the inquest, Calvin's sister, Sophie, expressed her grief, saying he was deeply missed and had a bright future as a boxer and footballer. She also shared that their mother had just given birth to a new brother named Cruz around the time of Calvin's accident.
