IPL expansion to 94 matches delayed by challenges
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is experiencing rapid growth and aims to become the top sports league in the world. However, expanding the league to 94 matches is facing challenges. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal shared that the league has quickly become the second-largest globally, but they want to ensure sustainable growth. For the IPL to reach a larger number of matches, it must align its schedule and have enough players. The National Football League (NFL) in the United States plays 272 matches over 18 weeks, generating substantial media rights deals. The IPL's upcoming media rights sales face uncertainty, especially with a merger affecting broadcasting. This season, IPL will continue with 74 matches instead of the planned 94. The scheduling is crucial because too many matches on the same day can lower viewership. Afternoon games attract less audience, impacting sponsorships. Dhumal emphasized the importance of finding the right timing for matches in future seasons. The interest in IPL remains high, and the playing window has been extended this year. Indian cricketers often have international commitments, making scheduling tricky. Sanjog Gupta, CEO of JioStar Sports, noted that expanding the league involves many factors, including talent depth and team dynamics. Despite the ongoing growth in viewership, IPL expansion is not imminent. Dhumal acknowledged the high interest from potential investors but stressed the need to carefully evaluate what is best for the league’s future.
