Ireland urged to strengthen actions against Israel
Francesca Albanese, a UN special rapporteur, visited Ireland and discussed the ongoing situation in Gaza. She emphasized that Ireland could take stronger actions against Israel without its proposed Occupied Territories Bill. Albanese highlighted that there is already an obligation under international law for Ireland not to conduct business as usual with Israel. During her visit, Albanese noted the devastating casualties in Gaza, with over 500 people, including 200 children, reported dead in just 48 hours, according to the Gaza health ministry. She described these events as acts of genocide that need immediate attention. Albanese stressed the importance of international law in resolving the Palestinian question and emphasized the obligation to prevent and punish genocide. She praised Ireland for its recognition of Palestine and its efforts, along with Spain, to review the EU-Israel Association Agreement. She also encouraged the Irish government to take concrete actions, such as scrutinizing military flights through Shannon Airport. Albanese met with President Michael D. Higgins and is set to meet with officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs.
