Irish gangster jailed for shotgun transfer in UK
An Irish gangster has been sentenced for his involvement in illegal firearms distribution in the UK. Austin Kennedy, aged 49, was convicted after his role in handing over a sawn-off shotgun in a car park in Heywood back in 2018. At that time, Kennedy was part of a gang transferring the weapon without knowing that police were monitoring them. After the exchange, he ordered a taxi but became upset when asked to pay in advance. Prosecutors noted that his reaction hinted at his position within the criminal group. Kennedy had used a special phone designed to avoid detection, indicating his criminal activity. In 2019, seven other gang members were sentenced related to this case. Although he fled to Ireland, he was extradited back to the UK recently to face charges. The court learned that Kennedy had a prior sentence for drug offenses and had not committed any crimes since his flight. His lawyer argued that the shotgun was low quality and not fully functional. Kennedy, a father and grandfather, expressed pride in his children's accomplishments. The judge determined that Kennedy was aware the gun would be used for illegal purposes and sentenced him to eight years and seven months in prison after he pleaded guilty. Following the verdict, a police official praised the collaboration with international agencies that brought Kennedy to justice, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to tackle organized crime and potential dangers to the community.
