IRS outlines three ways to extend tax filing deadlines
The IRS has outlined three ways for taxpayers to request an extension for filing their taxes, allowing them to file by October 15, 2025. Requests must be submitted by the original deadline of April 15, 2025. Taxpayers can request an extension by mailing Form 4868, using an IRS e-filing partner, or through a tax professional. Payments for any owed taxes must still be made by the April deadline. Additionally, U.S. citizens living abroad can receive an automatic two-month extension, and those affected by disasters may also qualify for an extension. Refunds are being issued, with the average amount around $2,065.
