Israeli startups tackle global food security challenges
Israeli startups are playing a key role in improving global food security through innovative technologies. These AgTech and FoodTech companies focus on solving challenges related to hunger and malnutrition. Despite advances in agriculture, many people across the world still face food shortages. The latest report on global food security warns that 582 million people might be undernourished by 2030, with Africa being the hardest hit. In the past year, approximately 2.33 billion people experienced food insecurity. While Africa has the highest rate of undernourishment, Asia holds the largest number of affected individuals. At the same time, 13.1% of adults globally are obese, highlighting the complex nature of food access issues. Israeli startups are addressing inefficiencies in food production caused by environmental challenges and climate change. For instance, drought and rising temperatures are reducing crop yields. Additionally, unsustainable farming practices are worsening the situation, creating a cycle that threatens food security. These startups utilize technology across the food supply chain to enhance productivity and sustainability. More than 750 companies are redefining agricultural practices, with 150 focusing on supply chain optimization, robotics, and alternative protein sources. Tevel's flying robots help address labor shortages by accurately picking fruits and detecting diseases. Other companies, like N-Drip and CropX, are innovating around water management to improve irrigation efficiency, saving water and increasing crop yields. Pollination services are also innovating, with BeeWise offering technological solutions to protect and maintain bee populations. This is crucial as a significant portion of global food production depends on pollination. Israeli startups are also venturing into food production. BlueTree creates natural beverages with low sugar without any chemicals. Oshi is working on a plant-based version of salmon to meet the demand for sustainable seafood. These innovations from Israeli entrepreneurs aim to tackle pressing global food challenges, promoting healthier diets and sustainable farming practices. By applying advanced technology, they hope to help redefine how we produce and consume food.
