Israel's Iron Wall operation displaces thousands in West Bank

Israel's Iron Wall operation has led to the displacement of tens of thousands of people in the West Bank. This military operation began shortly after a ceasefire in Gaza failed in January 2023. The aim was to improve security, but it has caused significant violence and loss of life. Between January and September 2023, over 200 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank. This number rose sharply after October 7, 2023, when another 930 Palestinians lost their lives, including 187 children. The United Nations reported close to 1,900 incidents of violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank during the last three months of 2023. Justine Lefeuve from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) highlighted the plight of displaced Palestinians. Many are living in makeshift shelters like community halls, schools, or with family. Some people have lost their homes and jobs, and families have been separated while fleeing. Pregnant women and those with chronic illnesses are struggling to find medical care, and the mental health impact is severe. Israeli forces have been accused of destroying infrastructure in places like the Jenin refugee camp. An Israeli military spokesperson claimed that militants use civilian areas for attacks, putting civilians at risk. The spokesperson also noted that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) facilitate safe exits for residents wishing to leave combat zones. Solidarity protests have occurred in neighboring countries, including a recent demonstration in Damascus. Tensions remain high as Israel continues military actions, including airstrikes in Syria. The International Court of Justice previously stated that Israel's occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem is illegal and called for reparations to be paid to Palestinians. Philippe Lazzarini, the commissioner general for UNRWA, criticized the destruction of civilian infrastructure by Israeli forces. He stated that this action aims to change the character of Palestinian cities and violates international laws designed to protect civilians and their property. Many displaced Palestinians tell MSF that their only wish is to return home.
