Italy and Hungary face criticism for media freedom violations
A new report from a coalition of civil liberties groups criticizes Italy and Hungary for violations of media freedom. Italy's government, led by Giorgia Meloni, faces accusations of significant political interference in public service media, particularly at RAI. The report highlights a recent increase in media censorship in Italy, including the alleged suppression of an anti-fascist monologue. Hungary is labeled an "electoral autocracy," showing a notable decline in the rule of law. Despite the European Media Freedom Act aimed at protecting media independence, the report states that EU member states have largely failed to implement its provisions. The act will fully take effect in August 2025.
