Italy's oldest barista, Nonna Anna, still working at 100
Nonna Anna, Italy's oldest barista at 100 years old, continues to run her Bar Centrale in Nebbiuno. She has been serving customers since 1958, opening daily at 7 am and closing at 7 pm in winter and 9 pm in summer. Despite her dedication, Italy's café bars are facing a decline, with 132,000 cafés now compared to 20,000 more a decade ago. Factors include long hours, low wages, and rising costs, making the profession less appealing to younger generations. Nonna Anna, who officially retired at 60, enjoys her work and the social interactions it brings. However, she acknowledges that fewer people engage in conversation, often preferring their mobile phones. She has no plans for the future of her café, as her daughter does not intend to take over.
