Jack Wilshere embraces coaching journey at Norwich City
Jack Wilshere, former Arsenal and England midfielder, is enjoying his coaching career at Norwich City while preparing for the London Marathon to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. Wilshere credits his desire to coach to Mikel Arteta, his former Arsenal teammate. He was inspired by Arteta’s passion and coaching style. This motivation led him to pursue a coaching career, and he is currently working towards his UEFA Pro Licence at St George's Park. His coaching path has been different from many of his peers. Instead of quickly moving into senior roles, Wilshere first worked as an academy coach after retiring in 2022. He made the choice to join Norwich as a first-team coach last summer, appreciating the opportunity to learn from head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup. Wilshere acknowledges the challenges of coaching. He has had to adapt his expectations, especially when working with young players who may not have the same skills he did. He emphasizes the importance of understanding each player's development and helping them find their way. He also discusses the need for more individuality in football. Many modern players follow strict structures during games, which can limit creativity. Wilshere believes that providing players with more freedom to express themselves is essential for the sport. As he works toward becoming a head coach, Wilshere reflects on the support needed for young English coaches. He highlights the importance of successful ex-players like Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard in paving the way for future generations. Wilshere is focused on his goal of becoming a head coach. His motivation extends beyond coaching; he is also running the marathon for his daughter, Siena, who underwent heart surgery last year. He finds the training tough but sees it as a challenge he is willing to embrace.
