Jackson police chief condemns violence after parade shooting
Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade strongly criticized what he called "lawless, reckless cowards" two days after a shooting during the city's St. Paddy’s Day celebrations left one person dead and several others injured. The shooting happened late Saturday night near the 4th Avenue Lounge, following a parade that attracted over 100,000 people. According to reports, the incident took place around Pearl and Lamar streets. A separate shooting occurred a few hours later at Capitol and West streets, with the victim in that case expected to survive. Authorities confirmed that the two shootings are connected, and Capitol Police are leading the investigation as the incidents took place within the Capitol Complex Improvement District. Wade expressed pain over the violence that marred the celebration, noting that law enforcement had invested significant effort to ensure the event was safe. He called out individuals for acting recklessly, especially after consuming alcohol. The deceased victim has been identified as 21-year-old Cortez George, and one of the seven injured victims remains in critical condition. Despite JPD not having direct jurisdiction in downtown Jackson, many officers assisted with the aftermath, helping transport victims to the hospital. A total of 84 officers were assigned to the parade, with help from various law enforcement agencies. Wade noted that their primary focus was to prevent any violent incidents during the parade, successfully avoiding potential terrorist threats. In the wake of the shooting, Wade also addressed troubling reports of fights among teenagers that erupted shortly after the parade, highlighting a broader issue of youth violence. He urged parents to take responsibility if they see their children participating in such behavior. The police are seeking information about the shootings and encourage community members to come forward with any details.
