Jackson Public Schools superintendent Jeff Beal has announced his resignation after more than 11 years in the position. The school board accepted his resignation on Tuesday, starting the search for a new superintendent. Beal plans to retire on June 30, coinciding with his daughter’s graduation from Jackson High School. In an internal email to staff, Beal expressed his love for the district and its community. He mentioned that the timing of his departure also relates to a projected $4 million budget shortfall. Beal is accepting a voluntary separation agreement that includes a $15,000 payout for all employees who opt for it. Beal highlighted the positive experiences he’s had while working in the district and mentioned caring for the school community. He hopes his resignation might help save some jobs in light of the budget challenges. The school board voted 6-1 to open the superintendent position for internal applicants. Trustee Kesha Hamilton opposed the motion, arguing the need for community input to shape the future leadership of the district. The Michigan Association of School Boards will assist in finding Beal’s replacement, aiming to compile a list of candidates by April 15. Beal became superintendent in June 2014 and previously served as the superintendent for Vestaburg Community Schools.
