Jadavpur University requests CCTV cameras for security
Teachers, staff, and students at Jadavpur University in Kolkata are calling for the installation of CCTV cameras on the campus and in hostels. They made this request in a letter to interim Vice Chancellor Bhaskar Gupta. The group believes that better security measures are needed at the university, including the Salt Lake campus. Selim Box Mandal, the state assistant vice-president of WBCUPA, noted that the Vice Chancellor condemned a recent attack on the education minister. The VC mentioned that a committee has been formed to evaluate where cameras should be placed on campus. Supporters of the CCTV proposal also discussed the need for a police outpost and emphasized the importance of following a 2014 High Court order. Binoy Singh, president of the JU Trinamool Siksha Bandhu Samiti, highlighted the group's support for these security proposals. However, another teachers’ group, ABUTA, opposes the idea of a police outpost at the university. They argue that it could harm the institution's autonomy and free-thinking environment. ABUTA's general secretary, Goutam Maity, called for a dialogue among students, teachers, and staff to resolve the issue without increasing police presence on campus.
