Jadavpur University students protest classmate's arrest
Students at Jadavpur University in Kolkata are protesting the arrest of their classmate, Souptik Chandra, by boycotting classes. They canceled their scheduled test on water resources and some lab sessions to express their concern. The students believe that these random arrests are aimed at instilling fear among them. Srija Ata, a civil engineering student, explained that they requested their Head of Department to postpone the test and lab activities. She emphasized that their classmate's arrest could easily happen to any of them next. Teachers at the university are also worried about these incidents. The Jadavpur University Teachers' Association (JUTA) met with interim Vice-Chancellor Bhaskar Gupta. They expressed concerns that student arrests create an atmosphere of intimidation on campus. JUTA members oppose the establishment of a police outpost on university grounds. On the same day, students organized an art drive, creating graffiti to protest against the police actions following recent events. Student Anirban Sadhukan pointed out the troubling pattern of arrests occurring shortly after others are granted bail, describing it as harassment. Philosophy student Anugna Roy believes that students are being falsely implicated, which leads to their bail. She feels this is part of a broader attempt to keep them under surveillance and calls for stronger resistance against state actions.
