Jamia professor arrested for alleged rape of colleague

A 36-year-old assistant professor at Jamia Millia Islamia University was arrested for allegedly raping a colleague, aged 31. The woman filed her complaint with police on Monday, leading to the man's arrest on the same day. According to police, the two professors met on April 26, 2024. The accused reached out to her via social media and later exchanged phone numbers. They began communicating on WhatsApp and met for coffee on May 8, where he proposed a romantic relationship. The woman reported that they started a physical relationship in June 2024, with the man promising to marry her. Their families even began discussing marriage arrangements. However, in October, his father declined the proposal, citing a "mismatch in horoscopes." The woman tried to report the issue several times in recent months but faced difficulties. On Monday, she finally decided to come forward. Police registered a rape case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhits, leading to the man's arrest. He was presented in court and placed in judicial custody. The university has not commented on the incident.
