J&K assembly protests police actions against Kulgam protesters
The Jammu and Kashmir assembly experienced a heated debate on Monday over police actions against protesters in Kulgam. This follows the deaths of two young men, which sparked protests in the area. Independent MLA Choudhary Muhammad Akram called for strict action against police officers. He accused a senior police official of kicking a woman protester and described the situation as serious. National Conference MLA Peerzada Feroze Ahmad supported Akram, suggesting that a panel be formed to investigate the deaths. Concerns over police conduct were echoed by other legislators. Nazir Gurezi, another MLA, questioned the law surrounding police actions, asking if police can act without accountability. Congress and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members joined in demanding action against the officers involved. Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather responded by saying the government was aware of the issue. He noted that the Chief Minister was listening to the concerns raised. The bodies of the two young men had been discovered recently, and their families accused police of torture. Speaking to reporters outside the assembly, PDP MLA Waheed ur Rehman Parra expressed worry about the treatment of certain communities in the region. He called for a probe to uncover the truth behind these incidents. Other leaders, including those from the Peoples Conference and Apni Party, also condemned the police actions. In response to the public outcry, the Jammu and Kashmir police announced an inquiry. They stated that a video of the incident was circulating on social media and that the Deputy Inspector General would investigate the matter and report within ten days.
