Japan targets 15% recycled plastics in vehicle production

Japan plans to incorporate recycled plastics into its auto production. The Environment Ministry announced that by 2035, at least 15% of the plastics used in new vehicle models will come from recycled sources. This move aims to encourage collaboration in the industry as the European Union pushes for similar measures. Currently, recycled plastics are not widely used in vehicles in Japan. This is mainly due to issues with quality and a lack of available supply. To meet the new goal, Japan will need between 25,000 to 124,000 tons of recycled plastics every year. Looking ahead, Japan aims to increase the target to at least 20% between 2036 and 2040. This would require 157,000 to 190,000 tons of recycled plastics annually. Starting in 2041, the goal will expand to cover all vehicles, needing around 200,000 tons of recycled materials. The European Commission, which is part of the European Union, is also considering a requirement for 20% recycled plastics in cars by 2031. Japan’s initiative is likely to be aligned with these upcoming European regulations, as long as it takes into account the use of additional recycled materials.
