Japan to operate hospital ships starting January 2026
Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced plans to start hospital ship operations by January 2026. This initiative aims to enhance medical care during large-scale disasters or outbreaks. The government adopted a program on Tuesday for these hospital ships. They will help transport patients from areas hit by disasters and provide medical care at sea. This decision follows a law that took effect last June, focusing on disaster preparedness, especially for potential megaquakes near the Pacific coast and Tokyo. Under the program, existing private-sector ships will be used initially. The government will work to form agreements with shipping and transport companies. They will also coordinate with medical organizations and conduct necessary drills to ensure readiness.
